An astonishing view

Enjoy a 360° view of different weather phenomena.

Sea of clouds

There is one exception: on certain winter or spring mornings in particular, the temperature at the Pic can be very close to, or even higher than, that on the plains. This is known as the "temperature inversion" phenomenon: on such days, when the weather is anticyclonic, it is colder at lower altitudes than at higher altitudes. This is because the colder, denser air is "trapped" at lower altitudes, while it is milder and drier at higher altitudes. It is often associated with a sea of clouds.

The most beautiful natural balcony in the Pyrenees is close by

Visiting the South-West, Midi-Pyrénées, Aquitaine? You're very close to the only summit in the French Pyrenees that's easily accessible by cable car.

This emblematic site overlooking the resort of La Mongie and the Col du Tourmalet is just a few kilometres from Lourdes. It is part of the heritage and history of the region where you are staying, and of the "Grands Sites de Midi-Pyrénées" collection.

Its location in front of the mountain range makes it the most beautiful natural balcony in the Pyrenees.

Sunset

During certain periods of the year, the Pic du Midi opens its doors for exclusive evenings so that holidaymakers can enjoy an exceptional panorama as night falls.

The show starts at the end of the day, depending on the season, and guides from the Pic du Midi will help you get to know our star, the sun, better.

Depending on the weather, you may even be able to use a telescope to observe the sun, then the green ray, the moon and the first visible planets.

Breathtaking sunsets, with the impression that time stands still in this suspended moment.

Milky Way

Thanks in particular to the work carried out by RICE, the Pic du Midi is a unique place in the world where observing the Milky Way is an unforgettable experience. In fact, the reduction in light pollution over an area of 3,300 km2 around the Pic means that observing the Milky Way with the naked eye is no problem at all.

In addition to this incredible spectacle, during the Perseids you can see up to 60 shooting stars every hour.

The place is so unique that a journalist from the Telegraph in the UK placed the Pic du Midi in 6th position in a ranking of the 10 best places in the world to observe the sky at night. A real accolade for the Pyrenean site, which now ranks alongside Fuerteventura in the Canaries, the Atacama Desert in Chile and the Cuzco Planetarium in Peru.
