The tour team offers a 45-minute tour (for groups only) covering a variety of themes of your choice:

• The History of the Pic du Midi: The cornerstone was laid at the summit in 1878; the human saga of the Pic du Midi’s construction is an adventure that continues to this day.

The Pic du Midi invites you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Pic’s pioneers. The 15 fully renovated rooms are those traditionally used by the Observatory's staff. They all offer breathtaking views of the Pyrenees mountain range.

Educational Programs

A site open year-round

The Educational Support Group for the PIC du Midi (GAPPIC, under the 1901 law) is composed of teachers and researchers from the Observatory. Its mission is to help teachers use the site for their school projects.

This website, designed to help teachers prepare for their visit, offers games and thematic worksheets related to astronomy, mountains, and science. These resources help students better understand the scientific issues at the site while making their experience more immersive.

The Pic du Midi is a destination that regularly hosts school field trips. It’s the ideal educational excursion, where learning and recreation come together. Topics that can be explored include landscape interpretation, wildlife observation, the history of the site, astronomy, and scientific experiments.

Spectacular atmospheric phenomena

Thanks to weather conditions conducive to observation, the Pic du Midi site offers fascinating atmospheric phenomena. As part of a school field trip, students can, for example, study certain phenomena that are visible under specific conditions. One of the best known is the green ray… though it is only visible at the Pic during sunrise or sunset; its green color is caused by a refraction effect in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Wildlife Watching at the Pic du Midi

The Pic du Midi is also home to Pyrenean wildlife. As soon as they arrive—or sometimes even during the cable car ride up—children get to witness the majestic flight of a bird of prey. What wild animals can be seen at the Pic du Midi? The best known is the griffon vulture, but also the yellow-billed chough, as well as the snow finch and the alpine accentor. Other, more elusive species—such as the pine marten, the stone marten, the marmot, the fox, and the ermine—inhabit the area surrounding the site. Developing a keen eye for observation is undoubtedly useful, just as gaining an understanding of the natural environment is a cultural treasure.

The Sun: A Fascinating Topic for a School Field Trip

If there’s one activity to plan for at the Pic du Midi—and one that you, as a teacher, can offer your students—it’s, of course, projects related to the sun.

The Pic du Midi Educational Support Group offers activity programs that cover a variety of topics. Live solar observation using the “Solarscope,” an optical instrument that allows for safe observation of the Sun in schools. It allows students to observe the Sun’s position and thus measure the Earth’s rotational speed, the solar noon, the tilt of the Earth’s polar axis, and more.

Astronomical Events

What could be more exciting and meaningful than organizing a school field trip to the Pic du Midi to coincide with an astronomical event?

For example, in 2015, teachers designed an educational project centered on the famous solar eclipse of March 20. According to education officials, observing a natural phenomenon as rare as a solar eclipse (even a partial one) is entirely justified and can be integrated into an inquiry-based learning approach. That is how they developed this project and enabled children to witness a major international astronomical event firsthand.
